Stoung Srov

Rice transplanting

Young seedlings pulled from the nursery, planted by hand, backwards through the water. Three to five per clump. Ten minutes to find the rhythm.

Chrot Kat

Harvesting season

When the rice is ready, all the farmers help each other. The sickle cuts at the base. Bundles tied, stacked, carried on the shoulder. November to January.

BanChoen Srov

Threshing

Rice bundles laid on a circular floor. A bull walks circles. The motion separates the grain from the stalk. Old method. Still the right one.

Session 2

Traditional tools

Three tools. Khmer names. Hands on all of them.

Kderng Khmer

Wooden pestle

A wooden lever built in the shade of a large tree. One foot pushes the pestle down into the mortar. Used to clean the rice before the grain is separated.

Tbal Bouk Khmer

Khmer mortar

A standing wooden mortar with a long handle. The farmer pushes the stick down to pound paddy rice clean of its husk. The sound carries across the village.

Chorng Ei Khmer

Bamboo winnowing basket

After the mortar, the rice is tossed in this bamboo basket. The husks blow away. The grain falls back. Made from bamboo by the farmers who use it.

Session 3

Land, water and animals

The buffalo is not a prop. It works this land every morning.

NoungKul Deiv

Single plough

Wood and iron, pulled by one buffalo through the paddy. The farmer walks behind. The soil opens in front. You walk alongside.

Ror Tes kor

Ox cart

Two wheels, hard wood, pulled by two bulls. Built to carry rice from the field to the farm store. What moves the harvest.

Rohat Teuk

Water wheel

Wood and bamboo, turning in the river current. Pushes water from the channel into the rice field. No electricity. No engine.

Session 4

Village crafts

Visit the village. Learn with your hands. This session runs long.

Khanchhour

Bamboo basket

Made from split bamboo. Used to broadcast the rice seed and to carry everything on the farm. You will make one. Take it home however far you get.

Tbarg Cheil

Traditional handicrafts

Guests visit the village and learn to make traditional Khmer handicrafts alongside the villagers. No script. No demonstration area. Just sit down and start.

Learn the farming calendar, how the rice is planted and harvested, and the tools that make it work. The knowledge that built this country.

How to book

Half day, full day, or one session.

All activities are open to staying guests. Day visitors are welcome too. Book one day in advance.

Morning on the farm
$12 per person. Sessions 1 and 2. Equipment included.

Afternoon on the farm
$12 per person. Sessions 3 and 4.

Full day with lunch
$25 per person. All four sessions. Best value.

Family day
$25 adult, $12 under 12. All sessions.

Buffalo ploughing (30 min)
$15 per person.

Cooking class
$20 per person. Minimum two. Three Khmer dishes. Kitchen bungalow.
